National Information Exchange Model (NIEM)
The National Information Exchange Model (NIEM), a partnership of the U.S. Departments of Justice and Homeland Security, is a community-driven, standards-based approach to exchanging information.
NIEM connects communities of people who share a common need to exchange information in order to advance their mission. It allows systems to speak to each other, even if they have never spoken before. NIEM ensures that information is well-understood and carries the same consistent meaning across various communities, allowing interoperability to occur. With NIEM, you only need to know two languages—your own and NIEM. NIEM is driven by the community, for the community.
NIEM brings together diverse communities that collectively leverage tools, processes, and technologies to increase efficiencies and improve decision-making.
The NIEM website (http://www.niem.gov ) is the focal point for all things NIEM-related. Here you will find news, documentation, training information, and reference materials to help you manage within the NIEM environment. Examples of resources available on the NIEM site include:
National Information Sharing Standards (NISS) Help Desk
The National Information Sharing Standards (NISS) Help Desk helps users find answers to technical questions regarding the content, principles, and best practices for using the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM).
Online support is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Online Knowledge Base
The Online Knowledge Base contains information about information sharing standards, specifically the Global Justice XML Data Model, the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM), and Information Exchange Package Documentation (IEPD) efforts.
The IEPD Clearinghouse is an interactive online repository that provides information about planned, in-progress, and completed IEPD initiatives. Developers can maximize resources and time by using the IEPD Clearinghouse to access reusable, NIEM-conformant artifacts. Most importantly, the IEPD Clearinghouse enables directly relevant collaboration between organizations and people working to solve similar problems within the justice, public safety, and homeland security communities. For questions about the IEPD Clearinghouse, contact the NISS Help Desk.
Global Standards Package
To achieve the interoperability and cost-saving aims of the Global Standards Council, the Global Standards Package (GSP) was developed. The GSP is a collection of normative, independently versioned standards that are assembled into a package of composable, interoperable solutions specifically supporting the exchange of justice information.
The GSP is composed of the following primary components:
