Appriss logoAppriss provides innovative technology solutions that keep communities safe and informed. Through victim notification, tracking offenders, and blocking the illegal sale of cold medicines, Appriss is improving the efficiency and accessibility of agencies across the country. Appriss specializes in helping agencies manage information sharing.

Its flagship product VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday), keeps crime victims informed on the custody and court status of offenders. VINE is now available in nearly every state in the country, as well as Puerto Rico, linking to approximately 95 percent of the nation's jails and prisons. In addition, the service has expanded to keep users up to date on probation and parole activity as well as when a protective order is served on an abuser.

Communities depend on the VINE suite of services everyday through email and telephone notifications. In some instances, lives have been saved because the families were notified before an offender arrived at their home.

JusticeXchange is a secure integrated justice solution that gives professionals access to an instant up-to-date database of more than 56 million booking records, 42 million incident reports, and other data from thousands of agencies across the country. It allows agencies to locate offenders, monitor probationers and parolees, view incident reports, set up watches for wanted individuals, as well as track down dead-beat parents.

Appriss provides the technology behind NPLEx (National Precursor Log Exchange.) This solution allows pharmacies to track and block the sale of cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine, a key ingredient in meth. It also gives law enforcement agencies immediate access to the list of those making purchases, allowing them to quickly track meth suppliers. Nearly a dozen states have adopted NPLEx as the service of choice to manage and monitor pseudoephedrine purchases.

In addition to its core products, Appriss provides 24/7 technology support including the assistance of live operators, who assist callers in registering for VINE or referring them to an agency in their community for assistance.

Training is a key part in helping communities become aware of the services Appriss provides. Weekly webinars are available to educate users on the products. A staff of learning specialists travels across the country conducting live, on-site trainings for criminal justice agencies on how to use the various services.

logo: BAE SystemsProtecting the security of client information; designing complex information highways.

Our information sharing service is supported by integration labs in Washington, DC, Charleston, SC, Annapolis Junction, MD, and Tewksbury, MA. This infrastructure enables us to research, develop, test, and evaluate leading edge solutions to solve our customers' most challenging information assurance problems. Our integration labs are staffed by CISSP CISA, and/or NSA IAM-certified subject matter experts.

We have successfully engineered and deployed a vast array of technical security controls across the globe. This includes deploying and supporting PKI to over 100 ships in the U.S. Pacific Fleet; implementing identity management safeguards such as PKI, biometrics, and tokens for a variety of clients; designing and implementing secure wireless solutions for various agencies; and leading the integration of the DOD enterprise-wide vulnerability management initiative.

For the Justice Department we are supporting 30,000 employees from a wide number of Justice components dispersed across 789 locations. In one successful task for Justice's Criminal Division, we performed the first implementation of Active Directory on the network and received an "Outstanding" satisfaction rating from the customer. In another task for the Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys we implemented: (a) the Microsoft Project Enterprise Solution; and (b) a BlackBerry Enterprise Server that integrates the office's Microsoft Exchange Server and incorporates a security architecture that ensures incoming and outgoing wireless e-mail is encrypted using the triple data encryption standard. In accomplishing this task we deployed and customized 13,200 computers and 1,108 switches in 239 locations within eight months.

Our 3D ProducCisco logotion Center produces solid terrain models (STM) using technology licensed from strategic partner Solid Terrain Models, Inc. STM models combine the worlds of flat maps, satellite and aerial imagery, and 3D physical terrain models into physical models that provide a level of understanding not found in any computer model, ordinary topographic model, or flat map. Models can be any size, from table top to wall mounted, and even tiled together to fill an entire exhibition hall. We have produced models for a number of users, most recently the Pentagon J2 and the 18th Airborne Corps.

logo: IBM“Effectively sharing information and actionable intelligence is vital to our Nation’s national security, counterterrorism and law enforcement agencies. Our biggest leaps forward will come from insights gleaned through perpetual, real-time analysis of data. At IBM, a sustaining IJIS member, we value the opportunity to partner with the IJIS Institute and our federal, state and local clients in these critically important mission areas.

image: smarter planet logoOn a smarter planet, answers are hidden in the data.

IBM is leading the way toward a smarter planet — working directly with our clients to reduce crime, strengthen counterterrorism capabilities and protect citizens and infrastructure - often in cost-constrained environments. We partner with law enforcement and other agency leaders to strengthen public safety and national security by transforming data into actionable information and intelligence. From advanced video and data analytics to real-time interoperability and collaboration — our mission is to help our clients meet theirs.

The biggest leaps forward in the next several decades will come from insights gleaned through perpetual, real-time analysis of data.

With nearly 2 billion people on the Internet (and counting), and with more and more of the world’s systems becoming digitally aware, there is greater diversity in the forms and shapes data is taking—transactions of every kind, rich media, social media. More data than ever is being generated, and at far greater speeds.

Yet, while data is growing at an exponential rate, time is not. Which is why no organization, city or country can afford “enterprise amnesia.”

And that is why the new science of analytics must be core to every leader’s thinking. This is not about volume. The key to moving from “big data” to smarter data is to organize your information, in all its diversity; to understand its context; and to manage its evolution.

Any data point, by itself, is just about useless. But when you see it in context, analyze that context in real time—and can automatically capture the connections that one piece of data is itself making with other pieces of data—then you have a smart system.

Smarter data, delivered in real time, lets us keep pace with a world where risk and opportunity are constantly in flux. Rather than relying on snapshots of the past, our decisions can be real-time, fact-based projections.

A world of smart data offers enormous hope. It also raises important issues relating to privacy and security. But fortunately, as thousands of forward-thinking leaders today are discovering, data’s hidden meanings increase transparency, sustainability and knowledge. Which is turning a bold predicting into a promising reality.

Let’s build a smarter planet. Join us at ibm.com/smarterplanet.
