“Why Can't We Share?”

graphic: cover of the "Why Can't We Share?" brochureThe “Why Can’t We Share?” (WCWS) initiative is sponsored by the IJIS Institute and partner organizations, including the Justice Information Sharing Practitioners (JISP) and the National Criminal Justice Association (NCJA). The goal of WCWS is to effectively make the business case to state and local policymakers and elected officials about the importance of supporting—both with policy and resources—justice information sharing initiatives.

graphic: cover of the "Why Can't We Talk?" publicationThe WCWS effort is modeled after the successful “Why Can’t We Talk?” outreach campaign developed by several state and local justice and first responder associations with support from the US Department of Justice, National Institute of Justice. The “Why Can’t We Talk” outreach effort was developed to communicate to federal, state, and local policymakers the challenges in implementing communications interoperability and how to overcome them.

The primary deliverable for the WCWS effort is a brochure that explains to the policymaking community the problems associated with interoperability and what policymakers can do to overcome them, by establishing cross-agency information sharing initiatives. There is also a one-page summary of the issues and recommendations couched in terms that are designed to acquaint elected officials with the problems of information sharing and the need to take action.
