Detroit Police Department’s Project Green Light receives the 2017 IJIS Institute Innovation Award

Project Green Light Detroit is the first public-private-community partnership of its kind, blending a mix of real-time crime-fighting and community policing.

Ashburn, Va., March 7, 2017. The IJIS Institute – a nonprofit organization, focused on mission-critical information sharing for justice, public safety, and homeland security – is pleased to announce Project Green Light Detroit as the recipient of the 2017 IJIS Institute Innovation Award. The award celebrates the accomplishments of Detroit Police Department (DPD) along with industry partner, Motorola Solutions. The award was presented at the Badge & Tech Benefit & Awards Dinner on March 2, at the Crystal Gateway Marriott in Arlington, Virginia.

The DPD partnered with eight gas stations initially that have now expanded to over 50 businesses that installed real-time camera connections with police headquarters as part of a groundbreaking crime-fighting partnership between local businesses, the City of Detroit and community groups called “Project Green Light Detroit." Project Green Light is the first public-private-community partnership of its kind, blending a mix of real-time crime-fighting and community policing aimed at improving neighborhood safety, promoting the revitalization and growth of local businesses, and strengthening DPD’s efforts to deter, identify, and solve crime. According to the Detroit Project Green Light website, “Incidents of violent crime have been reduced by 50% among the first group of businesses to enter the program.”

Steve Ambrosini, executive director of the IJIS Institute, said, “Detroit Police Department and Motorola Solutions are to be commended for their creative use of technology in the Project Green Light Detroit.  The project demonstrates a high level of innovation that allows police to respond quickly to ongoing incidents, and to clear them in a more efficient manner after the incident. Moreover, connecting business cameras to the PD makes for a safer environment in high crime neighborhoods.  It showcases what public and private sector cooperation can do to further the safety and security of our communities when they interact, brainstorm and work with each other.”

Honorable Mentions for the IJIS Institute Innovation Award are:

Fairfax County Broadband Interoperability Project – Fairfax County, Virginia, Department of Information Technology; Industry Partner: AT&T Government Services

Panic Button Pilot Program – SNOPAC911 Emergency Communications, Snohomish County, Washington;  Industry Partner: Rave Mobile Safety
